LOUDON, N.H. - Most of the year, Loudon is a sleepy community set in fields and forests sprawling lazily across the Soucook River Valley. Most of its 5,062 residents work at greenhouses in town or commute to Boston or Concord, N.H. They eat hearty breakfasts at the Eggshell, play bingo at the American Legion post on Village Road, and check out books and DVDs at Maxfield Library.
But this weekend, Loudon is a giant tailgate party.
Today the town hosts NASCAR's flagship Nextel Cup Series - and the 101,000 members of NASCAR Nation who came to watch the race at New Hampshire International Speedway.
They arrived in campers and trucks from all over the country and Canada, crowding parking lots and fields. They sold T-shirts and flags alongside Route 106, which bisects the town.
